Users were first introduced to the idea that their data was stored somewhere in the ether, aka “the cloud” around 2010. But that vague notion of the cloud was not reality. In the decade that followed, cloud computing has shaped how firms store, utilize and assess data. Despite its many benefits, the cloud presents new challenges for data security. Some nations have responded to this challenge by asserting that they must have their own national cloud. Our next webinar on November 23, at 10:30 will focus on the role of data in cloud computing, data sovereignty, and related security issues. Our three speakers will examine cloud computing from different vantage points in a moderated discussion.

Moderator: Professor Costis Toregas, Director, Cyber Security and Privacy Research Institute, George Washington University

Speakers:
  • Trey Herr, Director, Cyber Statecraft Initiative, The Atlantic Council
  • Josephine Wolff, Assistant Professor, Cybersecurity Policy,  Tufts University
  • Chelsea J. Smethurst, Senior Security Strategy, Cybersecurity Strategy, Microsoft

The intent of this and future Cyber Security and Privacy Research Institute (CSPRI) webinars is to give GW faculty and students glimpses of the vibrant security and privacy private sector in the Washington region and to promote dialog and debate regarding breakthrough initiatives. The potential for support for research or conference papers on related topics will be part of the discussion.
